Administration officials confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the ongoing US government shutdown, which is set to stretch into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

Russell Vought wrote on social media that “reductions in force have begun,” indicating the government’s process for terminating staff.

While the official did not specify which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that layoff warnings had been distributed within that department. Furthermore, a Department of Homeland Security spokesperson indicated that layoffs would also occur at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a labor organization for federal workers confirmed that members at the Education Department would be affected by the staff cuts.

Union Response and Court Actions

Union leaders cautions that the terminations would have “devastating effects” on public services relied upon by the public and vowed to challenge the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the government has used the funding lapse as an excuse to wrongfully terminate numerous employees who provide critical services to the public nationwide,” said a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The AFL-CIO reacted to the news, saying, “America’s unions will see you in court.”

Political Standoff and Budget Dispute

Congressional Democrats have declined to vote for a Republican-backed legislation to restore funding unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After multiple unsuccessful votes, the GOP leadership in the Senate have adjourned the Senate until the following week, indicating the deadlock is unlikely to be resolved soon.

During a press conference, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for rejecting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that 700,000 federal workers will see until opposition leaders decide to do their job and reopen the government,” Johnson stated. “Starting next week, American service members, who often live on tight budgets, are going to miss a complete payment.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Previously, unions sought a temporary restraining order to block the government from implementing any reductions in force during the shutdown. Additionally, a federal judge ordered the government to provide specifics on layoff plans, impacted departments, and if any government staff had been recalled to execute staff reductions.

An analysis contended that a government shutdown restricts the ability of the administration to carry out firings, referencing guidance that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been initiated prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs occurred on the same day that government employees received only a partial paycheck covering the final days of September but not the start of the current month, since appropriations lapsed at the beginning of the period.

A public service advocate, the president of the non-profit Partnership for Public Service, condemned the gridlock’s effect on federal employees.

This is unjust to make federal employees suffer because our elected officials in the legislature and the administration have not succeeded to keep our federal operations running,” Stier said. The air traffic controllers, veterans’ healthcare providers, smoke jumpers and food inspectors are not at fault for this funding crisis.”

A notable point is that lawmakers and top administration officials are still receiving salaries during the shutdown.
